Description: "What I liked was the promise of a happy, classless society in the future, in which everyone would enjoy all the good created by society." - Ella Shistyer; student and electrical engineer, Russia, summing up the promise of Communism. When Vladimir Lenin's Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace in 1917, they did so in the name of a new ideology. Millions were drawn by its promise. In Red Flag, the people who were there, from members of the Red Guard to party activists to students, explain how Communism appealed to their deepest hopes and dreams. Through them, we hear how Communist leadership, under Lenin and later, Joseph Stalin, compromised the proletarian ideal, and how hope eventually gave way to despair. The people remember: the storming of the Winter Palace, Lenin, Bolsheviks, civil war, mass literacy campaigns, Lenin's death, Soviets' "five-year plan," collectivization, kulaks, "show" trials, Stalin's purges.
Amazon.com: From the storming of the Winter Palace by Lenin's Bolsheviks in 1917 to the horrors of the Stalinist purges, this video provides a startling look at the major events of the Communist revolution in Russia. The backbone of the video is a series of first-person accounts delivered on camera by participants in historical dramas that have long been shrouded in secrecy or obscured by Soviet propaganda. An elderly disciple of Lenin who was among those who stormed the Winter Palace walks past the scene in St. Petersburg and describes his actions that night in 1917. Other old Russians recall the glories of the Revolution's early days, when teachers fanned out to teach peasants to read and workers struggled valiantly to build electric power plants in absurdly difficult conditions. A musician recalls playing in an orchestra which, true to ideological principles, had no conductor, so even musical decisions were made collectively. Playwright George Bernard Shaw visited the Soviet Union, calling it a "land of hope," and he's shown upon his return to Britain extolling the virtues of the Soviet system. Yet the true horrors of Stalin's police state are told as well, with gut-wrenching detail by survivors of the great famines and purges of the 1930s, in which millions starved to death, were executed, or were worked to death in labor camps. While the subject matter can be difficult to consider, the interviews with survivors are often riveting and the narrative highly engaging. --Robert McNamara

This film, and the others in the series, was produced by PBS along with the glut of specials and documentaries looking back at 1900 to 1999 that came along at the turn of the 21st century. The difference between this one and those others is that this is excellent. Actually there was one other documentary series about the 20th Century that does hold a candle to this one. That being "The Century: America's Time" which was produced by ABC News and hosted by the late great Peter Jennings. But as PBS ... Read More
