It DOES work with gamepad.I had a similar problem using Microsoft's Sidewinder.I just relaunched the game to change the buttons keys.First press the A button(sidewinder) to choose the button keys associated.It seems you HAVE to associate all the buttons to make the directional pad work properly.Don't forget:Monitor resolution:1024X768 if you have an iMac.
